Mr. Nibbs
5” x 5” | patinaed bronze casting, plastic
My second project for casting, "A Part of the Whole" focused on the idea of what makes up the whole of a visual. We were given the the task of finding an object and then exploring the boundary between whole and part by separating at least one component of that object. This could be done through removing part of the visual or adding a component to create something new.
Mr. Nibbs represents the way that simple changes in appearance, such as the addition of a hat and monocle, add a component of humor and child-like joy to a piece that would otherwise be absent.
Step 1: Make a Plaster Mold
2022
A story is only as good as its characters, so my first step was creating the backstory of my main character Jack Sterling, a young explorer in the 1930s. I decided that viewers were going to step into the story at Jack’s desk just before he sets off on the search for his missing Uncle Reid. I sketched a brief concept drawing of what I wanted my set to look including some possible props. This drawing would serve as not only a guideline for the graphic props I would create but also the antiques and props I would need to find elsewhere.
